This edition of Simplon UP focuses on two young Dutch bands. Het Voorwoord from Groningen and Muggy from Hengelo each showcase a different side of the alternative music scene, drawing on their own musical backgrounds.
Het Voorwoord is a Groningen-based project, born out of a brainstorming session between four friends in an Irish pub. The band has only just started out and is ready to share their passion for music with Groningen. Prepare to be surprised by a mix of indie rock, Dutch pop and, at times, a touch of punk. And don’t expect a fixed lead singer or guitarist: virtually every member is adept at playing various instruments. Curious about Het Voorwoord’s raw outbursts and more subdued moments? Muggy are a bunch of students from Hengelo who’ll drag everyone out of their seats and into the mosh pit. With Nirvana’s debut album as a major inspiration for their own songs, Muggy focuses on the grunge and punk scene in the Netherlands. They don’t mince their words and say exactly what they think. Loss, love or beer: you can always find a bit of yourself in Muggy. Let the raw emotion and explosive energy take you back to the early 90s!
