POPgroningen Talent Award stadsronde #2

Vanuit de POPgroningen Talent Award provincierondes worden totaal 8 acts geselecteerd die hun kunsten gaan vertonen tijdens de twee stadsrondes in Simplon. Welke Groningse talenten zien we terug tijdens de eindronde in Vera?

Moon Almighty
Moon Almighty houdt van de nacht, omdat ze dan eerlijker haar verhaal kan doen. Op donkere dagen zit ze op haar kamer gitaar te spelen, te zingen, te schrijven. Op lichte dagen is ze gelukkig in de zon met blote voeten in het gras en haar gedachten overal en nergens. Ze is verslaafd aan het schrijven van verhalen in elke vorm mogelijk over alles mogelijk en ‘s nachts lukt dat het best.
Haar gitaarspel is simpel, haar tekst complexer. Ze probeert te raken, schrijvend over de wereld, over gevoelens en Stephen Hawking. Soms wil ze een alien zijn en naar de maan vluchten in haar ruimteschip. Haar gitaar vindt ze het comfortabelste kledingstuk.

Cashmyra
Haar naam is Cashmyra. Met een blik op oneindig de ruimte in kijken terwijl ze serene rust uitstraalt blijft wel een van haar specialiteiten. Puur, rauw, doodeerlijk, verhalend en direct zijn woorden die men kan gebruiken om haar werk te omschrijven.
Naast muziek bestaat haar werk uit tekst, design, fotografie en film. Het liefste laat ze alles samensmelten tot een grote belevingswereld.

‘’Creatief. Origineel. Je kunt er niet omheen. Cashmyra’s nummers schuren tegen het ongemak aan, maar door haar open karakter is het heel toegankelijk’’, aldus de jury van de Grote Prijs van Nederland 2018. Als finalist in de categorie singer-songwriter heeft zij een verpletterende indruk gemaakt in Paradiso Amsterdam.
Haar live act kan als intens ervaren worden, het grijpt de aandacht en het is authentiek. Ze droomt nog steeds over jouw organen.

Van Marban
Lo-Fi fuzzy band, with an uncompromisingly loud vision of ProgRock . Although Van Marban’s songs are strongly rooted in the rock and roll tradition, what sets them apart is the massive physical force of their musical attack. However, Van Marban’s secret is not just being louder than anyone else, but staying simple enough to give each member the space to do damage both as individuals and as a group.

Their songs are a glorious celebration of rock & roll primitivism run through heavy distorted fuzzy amps. Nathan Barnacle’s drumming combines a crashing dustbin tone with a constant, rolling pummel that suggests a Ginger Baker on steroids, full of bludgeoning velocity. Ella Gwendolyn’s basslines are as thick as tar and bubbled like primordial ooze. Alex van Marban’s lightning-fast guitars slash and burn, and spacy vocals often break out into ecstatic shouts.

Put them together, and Van Marban’s primal din is an ideal corrective for anyone who wonders if full-on rock & roll is going to have a place in the neo-psychedelic revolution.

Hollow Men
In 2015 the young singer-songwriter Joris J. Mellema decided that he never wanted to be on stage by himself anymore. The songs needed to become bigger, more rough and multi vocal. Within 3 years these young men known as ‘Hollow Men’ did not remain unnoticed within the city walls of Groningen. With a set of autobiographic lyrics and an exploratory harmonious dynamic the band accomplished to develop an unique and recognizable alternative rock sound.

In the beginning of 2018 Hollow Men was surprised by their loyal crowd. The crowdfunding campaign that they launched to start their studio recordings aimed to collect an amount of 10.000 euro and this was funded in no time. Regardless a few changes in the bandmember occupation, the band bursts from energy! Hollow Men has set the plan to release their music in the Spring of 2019.
