Pitou her songs are intimate, deep and affecting. They create a world of their own, where the audience can step into, comforted by layered vocal harmonies. This earth-warming feeling of collectivity creates an atmosphere that is never melancholic or self-pitying. Even when dealing with the inexorable march of time, loss or heartache, Pitou infuses her music with light and hope.
Pitou her artistic awakening came from an unlikely source. At a young age, she developed an interest in classical music – her father would often find her crouched down by the radio, scrolling through stations in search of the sound of orchestras and choirs. From the age of 9, Pitou started singing in a children’s choir, and she soon found herself performing at the baptism of princess Amalia, singing the Matthäus Passion. At the age of fourteen she graced the lead role in the art house film Atlantis, but the music won. In 2015 she won a pop competition for singer-songwriters, and in 2017 she graduated cum laude from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. She released two EPs in 2016 and 2018, and returned last year, after four years, with new work. And that work sounds bigger than ever.
Big Tear, her long-awaited debut album which was released in March 2023, is a rich, fearlessly creative collection of alternative pop that draws from her classical background. By doing so she has given her songs a life of their own, inviting you along for the ride through life, death and everything in between. In combining classical instruments and vocal layering, Pitou has crafted wondrous new songs; deep, affecting, resonant. Pitou has imbued her music with light and optimism. She is a bright, shining lighthouse, piercing through the gloom.
