Heirloom is the new project of composer and guitarist Tom Broshuis. On this project he puts aside his folk-roots within former band Mister and Mississippi and instead develops his own take on post-rock and ambient music. The songs on his new album ‘Closure’ are varied and intricate, but are nonetheless able to retain the cohesion required to convey complex emotions of homesickness. The album was written as a tribute to the house which Broshuis grew up in. This nostalgia is almost palpable at times and is due to rich instrumentals and the occasional sample, rather than lyrics. The guitar- and drum work are similar to that of post-rock giants Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the sparse vocals are ethereal and are reminiscent of those used by Grouper, but the overall ambiance is more akin to that of ambient projects such as Stars of the Lid and Eluvium.
Under the moniker of atoomclub, Hugo Heinen creates droning, hissing sonic landscapes. Based on a series of physically demolished analogue tape loops and altered guitar sounds, the live show is a query about the relation between music, technology and time. Close your eyes, picture a non-existent 1970s sci-fi movie and ascend.
Our local ‘muziek boer’ H€NK also brings us some ambient drone music this evening.
